Curriculum

Reading: Our reading programs include multiple research based pieces to provide a strong overall learning experience.

  • Heggerty Phonemic Awareness Program. Heggerty is a research based program that will be used in kindergarten through fourth grade to increase phonological and phonemic awareness and improve spelling skills.

  • Wilson Fundations. Fundations is a research based program that focuses on word study specifically addressing reading (phonics) and spelling. Grades kindergarten through third grade will use this program to increase phonics skills enabling decoding of words.

  • McGraw-Hill Wonders. Wonders reading curriculum is used in all classrooms, Kindergarten through fifth grade.  Wonders emphasizes the “power of connection,” framing each six-week unit with an essential question, connected texts, and text-dependent questions.   

  • Lexia. Lexia is a research based program that aids in accelerating the development of literacy skills at their varied abilities. It is personalized to the needs of each child. This program is used in classrooms kindergarten through fifth grade as an additional support for students.

Reading Intervention Programs:

  • Systematic Instruction in Phonological Awareness, Phonics, and Sight Words (SIPPS) is a research-based curriculum that helps students in grades K–12 develop reading skills and fluency.

  • Wilson Reading Program provides intensive reading instruction for struggling readers. 

  • Take Flight is a curriculum for students with dyslexia that helps them improve their reading, writing, and spelling skills.

Mathematics:

  • Eureka Math² offers hands-on and real world learning experiences for all students. The program offers consistent math models, rigor to support the productive struggle, and coherence across grades.This program offers high quality materials for the staff to close the gap for equality in learning.

  • Zearn. Zearn is a science backed, research based program that provides additional support for math learners. It provides fact practice, video lessons for additional practice, and opportunities to learn from mistakes.

  • Reflex Math is a web-based, game-based program that helps students in grades 2 and up develop fluency with basic math facts in addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.

Writing and Handwriting:

  • Writing is based off of the Write Tools program and incorporated into the various subjects.

  • Kindergarten through 3rd grade support handwriting instruction through the program Handwriting Without Tears with additional support from Wilson Fundations.

Special Education:

  • Kindergarten through 2nd grade receive additional reading instruction through the SPIRE program.

  • Third through fifth grade students receive Phonics for Reading

  • We don't have one for math.

  • In the Self-contained classroom I am using the The Autism Helper Curriculum- It is a leveled program for all subjects.

Social Emotional Learning:

Capturing Kids Hearts (CKH)

2021-2022 school year the Elementary adopted the Capturing Kids Hearts learning program. This program centers on cultivating relational capacity, improving school culture, strengthening trust between teachers, students and families, creating accountability for teachers and students, and improving academic performance. Through the CKH process the Elementary became a national showcase school for the 2023-2024 school year and we will continue to strive for another showcase school year. SecondStep®

SecondStep® is a research based program developed to help students build social-emotional skills such as nurturing positive relationships, managing emotions, and meeting goals, so they can thrive in school and in life. Students who attend Ellicott Preschool begin learning from SecondStep® through 5th Grade.
